DATABASE 2 Version 2

Performance and integrity for the world's most demanding businesses

IBM delivers the proven industrial strength of DB2*, one of world's leading relational databases, right to your desktop.

DATABASE 2* (DB2*) Version 2 software enhances the DB2 family of products that provide reliable and consistent Relational Database Management Systems (RDBMS) for a wide range of system configurations from hosts to networks to single-users.

The DB2 engines support many popular operating environments including AIX*, OS/2*, HP-UX**, Solaris** Operating Environment, Windows NT**, and SINIX**, the Siemens Nixdorf UNIX operating system.

Enterprise Databases

End users are demanding more access and easier interfaces to data throughout the organization. To meet these demands, database developers and administrators can use the DB2 engines to distribute applications to the user's fingertips. With IBM Distributed Data Connection Services (DDCS), local DB2 applications have transparent access to enterprise servers that use Distributed Relational Database Architecture (DRDA) including DB2 family members for MVS/ESA, VSE, VM (SQL/DS*) and OS/400*. Conversely, the server versions of the DB2 engines support OS/2, UNIX**, DOS, System 7** and Windows** clients as well as DRDA application requesters on wide and local area networks.

You want to deliver the right data into the right hands at the right time. For more efficient and secure data transfer and deployment, DB2 databases can replicate data from multiple sources using the open architecture of related IBM Data Replication products. For strategic control, IBM DataHub* manages your system from a local or remote control point.

New features, Enhanced performance

DB2 Version 2 supports advanced object-oriented programming. Application developers can create user-defined types (UDTs) and user-defined functions (UDFs) specific to their needs. Common UDTs and UDFs can be shared among major languages including C, C++, COBOL and FORTRAN. The object-oriented combination of UDTs and UDFs encourages the flexible extension of databases with function libraries.

Large objects (LOBs) of up to 2 gigabytes can be manipulated like traditional data and accessed with Structured Query Language (SQL). Powerful built-in LOB functions including search, substring and concatenation can easily be extended and customized by the application developer.

For accurate maintenance and audit capability, triggers can alert users about changes to data, enforce business rules and validate input.

Complex data structures can be created and maintained with the combined strength of these new features. For example, DB2 for AIX includes the new Text Extender for AIX. DB2 Text Extender indexes and searches unstructured text objects using multiple techniques including Boolean, proximity and wildcard searches.

Open Database Connectivity (ODBC)

End user workstations can access any supported database server with the DB2 Client Application Enablers, available for OS/2, DOS, Windows, System 7 and UNIX clients.

The Windows client allows access to DB2 family databases by applications that support Microsoft** Open Database Connectivity.

Enhanced SQL Optimizer

The enhanced SQL optimizer provides the function and performance needed to exploit vast amounts of valuable information, both in traditional and in object-oriented applications. In distributed environments, end users often generate complex queries. By simplifying a complex query, the SQL optimizer delivers the best possible performance to the end user regardless of the way the query is structured. The SQL optimizer statistically determines the best path to data and allows the user to choose the most appropriate class of optimization.

Recursive SQL queries are now supported. These and may other SQL enhancements significantly improve database performance.

Very Large Databases. Very High Availability.

DB2 databases are limited only by physical system storage. They can be partitioned into separate table spaces spread across physical storage devices. Administrators can backup and restore data or add more storage without interrupting database operation. Parallel operation on multiple devices drastically cuts the time required for vital backup and restore operations. The high speed LOAD utility ensures fast recoverability through data loading.

Ease of Administration

To simplify the administration of multiple clients and servers, DB2 supports administration from remote workstations.
